Millie is now ready for adoption. Here is her foster-mum’s write-up…
“The gorgeous Millie! Where to start!
We have been fostering Millie for the last couple of months and she has come such a long way in such a short space of time. She is such a lovely dog.
When she first arrived, she was suffering with a poorly paw, stiff joints, dry skin, bouts of sickness and she was extremely overweight, weighing 38KG! She has now lost 5KG but does need to continue on her diet for a little longer to get the remaining excess weight off. Millie currently has fish oil and joint sure supplements in each meal to help with her skin dryness and her joints, which should continue, as well as some medication which will be explained further in her write up.
Millie does have quite a sensitive tummy and she currently only has her food alongside some chicken, fish and eggs for meal topper snacks. Any manufactured treats seem to make her sick, so much to her dismay she only gets carrots and occasional rabbit ears.
In the house, Millie is such a good girl, she settles without any problems when she’s left home alone, however she does prefer to be with you if she knows you are home. She currently sleeps on the floor in our bedroom but we have tried her downstairs too and in time we’re confident she would get used to that set-up if required by adopters. During the first couple of weeks, she would demand bark to be with you at all times and would become upset if you closed a door with her in another room. She is now much more confident and independent and can settle in one room whilst you’re in another.
On walks millie walks perfectly on the lead. She’s completely uninterested in other dogs and will ignore them. Humans on the other hand, she occasionally will pull for human fusses and adores meeting new people. She is still working o building up her stamina but can now comfortably walk for around an hour but will be very sleepy the next day and want to rest. She does sometimes go into another room when she sees her lead but once out the house she does enjoy her walks.
With our dog, Millie has taken well to being in a two dog household, but she’s not interested in playtime so would be suited to a quieter, calm dog or would be happy as an only dog too. She will bark at cats so not currently cat tested.
She has met a friend with a visiting child and was absolutely fine but due to the occasional grumpiness with the sofa and bed, would be suited to a home with older, dog-savvy children.
She absolutely loves her toy box and will always carry a toy up to bed with her on a night time ❤️.
As mentioned in the post, she was quite unwell when she arrived and this made her rather grumpy and stubborn at times. On a couple of occasions, she would grumble when told to get off the bed or the sofa but once she understood the rules she had not done this since. She will need adopters to be firm with her if she does this so she understands it won’t be accepted”.
Whilst in foster care, Millie has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and is now on medication (Thyforon) to manage this.
▪️Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid is under-active and doesn’t not produce enough hormone to regulate metabolism efficiently.
▪️ Symptoms include lethargy, weight gain and poor coat quality, all of which Millie presented with when she arrived.
▪️With medication, all of these symptoms improve and the prognosis is excellent, with dogs being able to lead normal, healthy and long lives.
▪️Medication is relatively cheap, costing around £12 per month online (excluding cost of prescription from your vets).
We would also recommend Millie continuing on over-the-counter joint supplements, as they are so beneficial to maintaining joint health.
