ADOPT ME

We are looking for a foster home (either temporarily until adopted or with a view to adopt) for Penny who came to us from the pound a few weeks ago after her time was up and she had been given a date to be euthanised.

Penny has been in foster for a few weeks now and has been fully vaccinated, but she has also had to have a series of X-rays due to an obvious issue with both hind legs, which is probably why she ended up as a stray.

X-rays show that Penny has torn cruciate ligaments on both sides and she will therefore need a bilateral TPLO, done in two stages a few weeks apart.

Penny’s recovery will take several weeks, which her current foster cannot commit to due to an extended holiday.

Here is her foster-dad’s current write-up for Penny….

“Having collected this beautiful underweight Rottie from a council kennels a little over 5 weeks ago, we have discovered what a companion she is

In the home she is not needy, she almost never barks – in fact, I’ve only heard her bark once but what a bark! She has never has made a mess or chewed anything.

When it’s bedtime, she settles and has the freedom of the house with no issues. She does not get on the furniture or attempt to go upstairs. She sits and waits for her food which she has morning and evening. She has shown no signs of separation anxiety.

She has been with younger members of our family (8 years old) and has behaved impeccably, as she has with everyone.

Outside:
We have kept her walks short because of the issue with her legs but she walks great and responds to “come” and a whistle well. She will sit and lay down when told, albeit slowly sometimes.

She has met other dogs and has reacted positively. Even when a small dog lunged and growled at her, she remained calm. She has reacted just once to a puppy who kept trying to jump on her, but this was an isolated reaction and may have even been down to discomfort in her legs (which she is on pain relief for until her TPLO).

Penny greets all people and has been to the pub and friends houses without any issues.

She has been to the beach and she enjoys the water – that’s when we can stop her obsessing over all the people with balls, which is the top of her favourite things! She is totally focused on balls but we have restricted access to them because of her leg issue.

She has traveled quite a few miles with us and she loves it (but I have a low access vehicle so she can get in easily with her bad leg and she may need help getting in a hatchback/4×4 until her leg issue is sorted).

This Rottie girl just wants loving and she will give you the same back tenfold”.

Penny’s operation will be done at West Midlands Referrals in Burton on Trent so foster homes will need to be within a reasonable driving distance of Burton.

In view of her recovery time (which I have included a screenshot showing the standard timeframes), we would like a dog-free home and older kids (12+) and, as she isn’t cat-tested, a cat-free home.

Rottie experience would be preferable, though she’s such a good girl this isn’t essential – as long as you are used to being around larger breeds.

It’s really important we find somewhere for Penny ASAP as she has now been referred to WMR.
